Introduction
SEBI has launched MITRA (Mutual Fund Investment Tracing and Retrieval Assistant), a new initiative aimed at helping investors trace their inactive and unclaimed mutual fund folios. Over time, many investors lose track of their investments due to outdated contact details, forgotten accounts, or minimal KYC compliance. With the introduction of MITRA, investors can now locate their lost investments and take necessary actions to update their KYC details.
The Need for MITRA
Many mutual fund folios remain inactive due to reasons such as:
Inactive mutual fund folios may become susceptible to fraudulent redemptions, making it crucial to introduce a robust mechanism for tracing and retrieving them.
How MITRA Works
MITRA is designed as an industry-wide, searchable database of inactive and unclaimed mutual fund folios. Developed by Registrar and Transfer Agents (RTAs), it empowers investors in several ways:
1. Identification of Forgotten Investments: Investors can check for any overlooked investments or any folios where they may be legal claimants.
2. Encouragement of KYC Updates: Users are prompted to update their KYC details, reducing the number of non-KYC compliant folios.
3. Reduction of Unclaimed Mutual Fund Folios: MITRA aims to lower the number of inactive mutual fund investments.
4. Enhanced Transparency: The platform contributes to a more transparent financial ecosystem.
5. Fraud Prevention: Built-in mechanisms will help mitigate fraud risks associated with inactive folios.
Classification of Inactive Folios
A Mutual Fund folio will be classified as inactive if no investor-initiated transactions (financial or non-financial) have occurred in the last 10 years, but a unit balance is available. Investors who intentionally keep their money invested will not face any consequences.
Availability of the MITRA Platform
The MITRA platform will be hosted jointly by the two Qualified RTAs (QRTAs):
It will be accessible through links on:

Conclusion
MITRA is a game-changer for mutual fund investors, ensuring they never lose track of their investments. With this investor-centric initiative, SEBI aims to bring greater transparency, security, and accessibility to the mutual fund ecosystem. If you think you might have inactive investments, be sure to check the MITRA platform once it goes live!
