Most losses that reach a grievance forum were preventable at the point of a signature or a shared credential. These are the practices SEBI expects every demat account holder to follow — short, specific, and worth reading before you need them rather than after.
| Do | |
|---|---|
| i. | Always deal with a SEBI-registered Depository Participant for opening a demat account. |
| ii. | Read all documents and conditions carefully before signing the account opening form. |
| iii. | Accept the Delivery Instruction Slip (DIS) book from your DP only, pre-printed with a serial number and your Client ID, and keep it in safe custody. |
| iv. | Mention details such as ISIN and number of securities accurately on every instruction. |
| v. | Strike out any blank space on a DIS. Every cancellation or correction must be initialled by all holders. |
| vi. | Inform any change in your personal information — address, bank account, email, mobile — in the prescribed format, and obtain confirmation that it has been updated. |
| vii. | Mention your own mobile number and email ID in the account opening form so you receive alerts and updates directly from the depository. |
| viii. | Ensure the mobile number and email linked to your demat account remain the ones you personally control. |
| ix. | Register a nomination, or record an explicit opt-out. |
| x. | Review your Statement of Transactions and Consolidated Account Statement when they arrive. |
| xi. | Keep a record of documents signed, DIS issued and statements received. |
| xii. | Ensure all demat account holders sign every instruction, in the order in which the account is held. |
| Don't | |
|---|---|
| i. | Do not sign blank or partially filled Delivery Instruction Slips — a signed blank DIS is equivalent to a bearer cheque. |
| ii. | Do not leave your DIS book with anyone else, including your broker or an intermediary. |
| iii. | Do not share the password of your online trading and demat account with anyone. |
| iv. | Do not share your TPIN or any OTP with anyone, including anyone claiming to be from your broker or the depository. |
| v. | Do not provide someone else's mobile number or email as your registered contact details. |
| vi. | Do not act on unsolicited investment tips, assured-return promises or messages from unregistered advisers. |
| vii. | Do not deal with unregistered intermediaries, however well known they claim to be. |
| viii. | Do not delay reporting an unauthorised transaction — raise it the day you notice it. |
Raise it with ATS first — in writing, so there is a record. Write to dp@adityatrading.com or raise a ticket.
If you are not satisfied with the resolution, you can escalate to SEBI through SCORES, or file for online conciliation and arbitration on the SMART ODR platform. The full escalation path is set out in the Investor Charter.
A signed blank DIS is the equivalent of a signed blank cheque for your securities. Whoever holds it can fill in any quantity, any ISIN and any destination account. Strike out unused space, and never leave your DIS book with anyone.
Never. TPIN is issued by CDSL directly to you so that only you can authorise a debit from your demat account. No employee of ATS, CDSL or NSDL will ever ask for it. Any such request is fraudulent.
Every alert about a debit from your demat account goes to those contacts. If they belong to someone else — including a relationship manager or a family member handling your trades — you lose the ability to detect an unauthorised transaction.
You must either register a nomination or explicitly opt out. Registering one is strongly advisable: without it, transmission of your securities to your family requires substantially more documentation at a difficult time.
Contact your depository participant immediately — do not wait for the next statement. Raise it in writing so there is a record, and escalate to SEBI SCORES if it is not resolved.
