If you hold shares as physical certificates, you need to dematerialise them before you can transfer or sell. Where the certificate is jointly held and the names appear in a different order from your demat account, transposition corrects the sequence — and both can be done together in a single request.
| Process | What it does | When you need it |
|---|---|---|
| Dematerialisation | Converts physical certificates into electronic holdings in your demat account | You hold share certificates on paper |
| Transposition | Reorders the names of existing joint holders | Certificate says "A and B", demat account says "B and A" |
| Transposition cum Dematerialisation | Both, in one request on one form | Both conditions apply — which is common with older family holdings |
Submit this form to ATS along with the physical certificates. Use a separate form for each company (ISIN), and for each certificate type if they differ.

Dematerialisation is the process of converting physical share certificates into electronic form so they can be held in your demat account. You submit the certificates with a Dematerialisation Request Form (DRF) to your depository participant, who forwards them to the company or its registrar for verification and destruction of the physical certificates.
Transposition is changing the ORDER of names on a jointly held certificate — for example, certificates in the name of "A and B" when your demat account is "B and A". The holders are the same people; only the sequence differs. Transposition aligns the two so the certificates can be dematerialised into the existing account.
It is a single combined request that transposes the order of joint holders and dematerialises the certificates at the same time, using one form. It saves you from doing two separate processes when the only mismatch is the sequence of names.
No. Transposition only reorders existing names. Adding or removing a holder is a transfer or transmission, which is a different process with different documentation.
Once the depository participant forwards your request, the company or its registrar verifies the certificates before confirming. The timeline depends on the registrar; you can track the request status through your DP.
A minor difference in the order of joint names is handled by transposition. A difference in the name itself — spelling, initials expanded, a changed surname — needs supporting documentation. Contact ATS before submitting so the request is not rejected.
Transfer of securities of listed companies is required to be in dematerialised form. You may continue to hold certificates, but you will need to dematerialise them before you can transfer or sell.
