An index tracks a basket of stocks as a single number, so one value tells you how a whole market or sector moved. These 9 NSE indices each have a page with the live level, the day and 52-week range, returns from 1 day to 5 years, Classic, Fibonacci and Camarilla pivots, the day's gainers and losers, and the full constituent list.
Benchmark vs sector indices
The Nifty 50 is the broad-market benchmark — the 50 largest and most liquid NSE companies, weighted by free-float market capitalisation. The sector indices narrow that to one industry, which makes them the quicker way to see whether a move is market-wide or confined to banks, IT or metals.
How index weighting works
NSE indices are weighted by free-float market capitalisation, so a company's influence depends on the value of its freely tradable shares rather than its share price. A large constituent moving 1% shifts the index far more than a small one moving 5% — which is why the constituent list and weightings on each index page matter when you are reading a move.
