One gram of 24 carat gold currently buys about 65 grams of silver. That ratio has ranged roughly between 30:1 and 100:1 over the past century. A high ratio is sometimes read as silver being cheap relative to gold, and a low one the reverse — though the ratio can stay stretched for years, so it is a context indicator rather than a trading signal.
Silver also behaves differently from gold. Roughly half of silver demand is industrial — solar panels, electronics, electrical contacts — so it responds to the economic cycle as well as to safe-haven flows. Combined with a much smaller market, that makes silver noticeably more volatile than gold in both directions.
| Route | Suits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Physical bars & coins | Long holding, tangible | Storage, purity, resale spread |
| Silver ETFs | Most investors | Expense ratio, tracking error |
| Silver mutual funds (FoF) | SIP investors without a demat | Extra layer of cost |
| MCX silver futures | Active traders | Leverage, margin calls, expiry |
MCX silver trades in three contract sizes — Silver (30 kg), Silver Mini (5 kg) and Silver Micro (1 kg) — so the micro contract is the accessible one for a smaller account. Futures are leveraged instruments and can lose more than the margin posted; they are not a substitute for holding the metal.
Silver is ₹2,33,060 per kilogram today, which is ₹233.06 per gram and ₹2,330.6 per 10 grams. This is an indicative rate derived from the live MCX silver futures price as of 29 Sept 2026, 9:19 pm IST, including 3% GST.
It is a convention that follows value density. Silver is roughly sixty to seventy times cheaper than gold by weight, so a per-gram silver price would be a small number with awkward decimals. Indian markets quote silver per kilogram and gold per 10 grams, and the MCX contracts follow the same convention.
999 silver is 99.9% pure — the standard for investment-grade bars and coins. Sterling silver, used for jewellery and cutlery, is 925 (92.5% pure) because pure silver is too soft to hold a shape. The rates here are for 999 purity.
The gold-to-silver ratio is how many grams of silver one gram of gold buys. Right now it is about 65:1. Historically it has swung between roughly 30:1 and 100:1, and some investors treat a high ratio as a sign silver is cheap relative to gold.
Yes. The rates on this page include the 3% GST that applies to silver. Jewellery and articles carry making charges on top, which are set per design by the seller.
There are four routes: physical silver (bars and coins, with storage and purity to manage), silver ETFs (exchange-traded, no storage, low cost), silver futures on MCX (leveraged, for traders rather than long-term investors), and silver mutual funds that hold silver ETFs. Nothing here is investment advice.
Because a large share of silver demand is industrial — solar panels, electronics and electrical contacts — so it reacts to the economic cycle as well as to investment demand. The silver market is also far smaller than gold's, so the same flow of money moves the price further.
